Dear Readers,
We present to you the latest issue of Wiedza Medyczna, in which we explore the field of dentistry from two exceptional perspectives: historical and interdisciplinary. The articles reveal not only the rich history of dentistry but also the contemporary challenges arising from the connections between oral health and systemic diseases.
The article “The Evolution of Dentistry: From Ancient Practices to Modern Science – insight into selected aspects” by Justyna Grudziąż-Sękowska and co-authors presents the history of this field, which is inextricably linked to the history of medicine. Scientific and technological progress exemplifies how approaches to pain, aesthetics, and patient quality of life have evolved. The authors remind us that dentistry—though often perceived as a technical discipline—stems from the humanistic current of medicine, which is concerned with human well-being.
In turn, the publication “Chronic kidney disease and oral health – a review” by Kuba Sękowski and colleagues is a reliable, comprehensive review based on the current state of medical knowledge. The article demonstrates the multifaceted relationships between chronic kidney disease and oral health. The authors present pathophysiological mechanisms, including the effects of chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, microbial dysbiosis, and bone mineralization disorders, emphasizing the role of the dentist as an essential member of the therapeutic team for nephrology patients. This is an important contribution to the field of evidence-based medicine (EBM), encouraging the integration of dental care into the treatment of chronic diseases.
We are also pleased to inform you that this issue includes abstracts presented during the 2024 CMKP Young Scientists’ Forum, which—as every year—showcases the potential of young researchers involved in the development of interdisciplinary research and modern clinical practice. The presented works are evidence that the future of Polish medicine is being shaped in an environment that is active, creative, and open to new challenges.
We encourage you to read, reflect, and—perhaps—to find inspiration for further research and clinical practice.
With best regards,
The Editorial Team of Wiedza Medyczna
